What are the possible complications?

Complications from tympanoplasty are rare, but can include:

  • The ear may stick out and feel numb for a few weeks

  • damage to the nerve controlling taste (this runs along the edge of the eardrum)- leading to a metallic taste on that side of the tongue, which usually dissipates after 3-4 months

  • tinnitus

  • dizziness

  • rare risk of a deterioration in hearing

  • failure - sometimes the graft does not take or can breakdown. Care must be taken to avoid any sudden pressure change and it is advised to avoid flying and playing wind instruments
